People can get a Protonmail address for free, with up to 500 megabytes of storage, so they can keep the memes they like and delete after a while. I have had a number of difficulties over the years with Spamhaus. They are not willing to clear any IP address from their system, even after 9 years, so we finally gave up and moved.

I also like Protonmail. My alternate email is badraig@protonmail.com and I've had to use it a lot lately.

(Badraig is Armenian for Patrick. My mother-in-law is Armenian, so it seemed like fun. And patrick@protonmail.com was already taken.)

Intriguing. In Irish, "Patrick" is "Padraig." So there would seem to be some connexion to the Gaelic/Gaullish language and the Armenian language.

I sent you protons.

that was not my experience. I always found them very responsive.

Usually it was someone's infected computer behind the firewall that was firing off spam and set off the alarm at Spamhaus.

They have not responded all to my ticket this time.

Nothing.

The first time, about 10 days ago, they just said "Solve your problem" without ever telling me what the problem supposedly was. A bunch of users from patrick.net protested and wrote in, and they unblocked my IP.

Then they banned my IP again. I filed another ticket and got no response at all.

One reader pointed out that they're a British organization, and Britain jails people for criticizing Islam.

That might be the reason they blocked my IP.

I’m curious who Spamhaus is connected to financially.

I'm also interested, because they are supposedly an unfunded "anti spam" company, but their commercial arm is literally in the shadow of Buckingham Palace:

And the part that actually bans IP addresses is in the tiny country of Andorra, to make it hard to sue them for libel.

Right on. I get it. But in order to be that much of a control freak, and to desire that level of control over others is definitely a mental illness.

Yes, their site seems to have a lot of bugs.

Yet somehow some major email providers like Hotmail and iCloud.com trust such an unprofessional group.

"Thank you for contacting the Spamhaus Ticketing team,

We have removed the IP from the CSS; please allow some time for propagation. As there are no whitelists, if the problem has not been solved, the IP will relist."

But _what problem_?

They never said exactly.

Or gave me any example of the "spam".

Or said exactly what to do to get off the blacklist.

It's like a Kafka novel.

I sent a strongly worded letter. I think we all need to send our Senators and Representatives a strongly worded letter asking why a foreign based company is allowed to restrict speech in the US and for an investigation into who is funding this business. I’m writing mine.

Thank you very much!

It really is insane that an unaccountable foreign corporation is allowed to restrict political speech in the US.

Pathetic. We now live in a world of endless psy-ops, censorship and control. Everyone I follow or listen to has been de-platformed or censored at one time or another over the past five years. I pray for all of us. I am feeling like something ominous is coming, and everything around me is falling apart right now.

Also, a man in London started this non profit. No doubt a globalist. They are headquartered in Geneva Switzerland with addl offices in London. They may have been headquartered in Andorra but apparently that’s old information. They don’t publish a list of the major donors. I’m still curious as to why this is allowed from a non US company. And of course, you can’t sue the e-mail companies as they’re protected. Butthead lawmakers took money to protect them, in all likelihood. But Spamhaus has been successfully sued. But in Switzerland? Difficult and costly, and dicey at best. I did send a letter saying I’ve been on your list for years and never received even one spam email. I also suggest you were on the list for political reasons.

I sublitted a request to Soamhaus. It appears the page is designed for the site owner to request delisting but I went ahead and entered my e-mail whereupon I received e-mail from them with a link to confirm my request and I clicked it. I hope our efforts work for you Patrick. I quite enjoy your memes.

Spamhaus currently says that you're no longer blocked and there are no problems with your I.P address.

Hopefully that's now sorted.

This is the second time in about 10 days though.

Would be nice if they'd show me some evidence of the supposed problem, but they don't.

I got zero reply to my ticket this time. The first time, it was just "Fix your problem" without ever saying what the problem supposedly was. This time, simply no answer to my ticket.

It's like secret police picking up a known political dissident with no explanation, releasing him a few days later with no explanation, then doing it all again.

What's my recourse when unfairly accused by Spamhaus? Apparently there is none besides getting you all to write in.

Looks like you're in the clear.

In IT, I used Spamhaus for years to identify spam email servers. It's always been a great service.

Sometimes they get false positives, usually from some device behind your firewall that's been infected with a virus.

Glad the situation is rectified.

Expand full comment
patrick.net/memes's avatar

Pretty sure that's not the case here. If it were, why wouldn't they give me some example of the supposed "spam", and why did they agree to unblock my IP?

my experience with them is 15 years ago and more. It is entirely possible that the organization has been leveraged and corrupted.

Maybe some group outside of Spamhaus kept reporting my memes as spam for political reasons.

But still, it's very poor practice if they block without checking whether the site is actually sending spam.

"Freedom of reach" is very important too. They block or suppress the threats to the authorized narratives - it's that simple.
